Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the overall effects of undergraduate experiences on students’ aspirations for graduate and professional school attendance, especially for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, based on a survey of a nationally representative sample of college students. Hierarchical General Linear Models (HGLM) analytics were employed to address a critical question at the intersection of the commitment to improve the quality of college experience and educational outcomes. Results highlight how the quality of college experiences differentially influences students’ progression toward to the next level of education, and further indicate the importance of providing students with academically and socially integrated experiences within their institutions. Based on the results, implications are drawn for theory, policy and research.
