Self-Efficacy Profiles Among ESL Learners in Vietnam

Abstract

This study used latent profile analysis to identify groups of students who had similar profiles for their self-efficacy beliefs for learning English as a second language in Vietnam. The identified subgroups were compared on different background variables, English proficiencies, and English self-regulated learning strategies. This study also aims to provide additional evidence for cross-cultural validity of the English self-efficacy scale. Consistent with our a priori expectations and research findings, there were three identified self-efficacy profiles for English language learners in Vietnam representing low, medium, and high self-efficacy. More efficacious students reported more frequent use of English self-regulated learning strategies and demonstrated significantly better performance on English language tests.
