While educators understand the importance of recess and unstructured play for elementary school children (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2013) current issues have reduced time children spend outdoors. Recess time has been cut back to provide more instructional time for literacy and math skills. This mixed methods study is part of a collaboration between a private university and a public elementary school to examine the implementation of a before school play club. Drawing on observations of children’s play periods, child interviews, teacher interviews, and parent surveys, findings indicate that play has significant academic and social benefits for children. Data supports an argument for the expansion of play, including recess and school programs, for all children as a social justice issue.
