An Examination of Career and Technical Education Among Rural Community College Students

Abstract

While interest in career and technical education (CTE) has grown markedly in recent years, there is a clear gap around our understanding of CTE participation among rural community college students. This study addresses this gap by using nationally representative education data and a series of logistic regression models to see whether community college students who live in rural areas are more or less likely to declare a CTE major in college, and which community college student and institutional-level characteristics are predictive of declaring a CTE-major and how the various student and institutional-level factors predictive of declaring a CTE major change by CTE career cluster area. Results and implications for policy are discussed.
