Search Engines and Multiculturalism

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this study, the author typed keywords on Bing, Google, and Yahoo, related to multiculturalism and recorded what was suggested by these search engines. Two coders (the researcher included) independently coded the suggestions as either negative, neutral, or positive in light of the following question: “In this suggestion, is multiculturalism portrayed in a negative, neutral, or positive manner?” Results showed some very negative portrayal of multiculturalism by the search engines. Findings of this study are discussed and the suggestions are made.
