The Relationship Between School Leadership Standards and Imperatives of School Administration

Abstract

Since the 2000s there has been a growing global interest in addressing school leadership policies. Even so, knowledge on the international use of school leadership standards is limited, specifically on its relations to various role demands or imperatives of school administration (i.e., managerial, instructional, moral and socio-political). Drawing from the International Leadership Standards Study and TALIS data we performed a descriptive analysis of leadership standards through the lens of school administration imperatives. The findings indicated that the country's school leadership standards policy is more diverse when explored by imperatives; at the same time they revealed a broad consensus among countries promoting standards on managerial aspects as well as isomorphism and detachment from practice in several contexts. Findings implications are discussed.
