Abstract

This study examined school district administrators’ perceptions and hiring practices of teachers with international student teaching experience and the long term effects on the lives of teachers. Administrator perceptions aligned with the literature in which student teachers and teachers expressed that their international student teaching experience improved their knowledge and skill more than student teaching in America. However, while student teachers and teachers also believed that their international student teaching experience was an advantage in the hiring process, 29 of the 30 administrators interviewed in this study indicated that their districts had no formal way of accounting for it. This study adds to the research about teacher hiring practices and effects on the lives of teachers.
