Professional Hmong Women's Academic Attainment and Achievements

Abstract

Hmong women today are revolutionizing their lives through entering professional occupations due to their academic attainment. Ten professional Hmong women’s journeys toward academic achievement were investigated. A qualitative approach included interviews guided by three theoretical frameworks: Cultural Capital, Social Identity, and Self-Efficacy. Data included multiple perspectives of professional Hmong women on their childhood backgrounds, experiences growing up as Hmong women, educational journeys, career choices, cultural heritage, and family perceptions on the importance of education. Results included three themes: self-actualization, educational value, and support systems. Findings revealed that Cultural Capital, Social Identity, and Self-Efficacy impact academic achievement and goal attainment for participants.
