A Case Study on the Phenomenon-Based Learning of a Comprehensive School in Helsinki, Finland

Abstract

In this study, we discuss the implementation of phenomenon-based learning in the recent curriculum reform at the Helsinki school in Finland, as well as the design of its learning environment. We were mainly focusing on exploring the characteristics of phenomenon-based learning environments that need to be examined in light of new developments in the science of learning. The study involved a case study of a 1-9 grade comprehensive school. The researchers spent ten months participating in the field. A variety of data collection methods were used, including participant observation, data analysis, and interviews. We expect that more examples of the practice in the areas of all subjects provided will make the arguments in the present research more concrete in the future.
