This study identified the heterogeneous nature of students’ perceptions on teaching methods and investigated the predictive factors at student and school level as well as differences in creative competencies. Applying Multilevel Latent Profile Analysis (MLPA) to capture the structure of nested data, five distinct profiles were identified: the ‘high teacher-centered and high learner-centered profile’, ‘high teacher-centered with discovery and exploration learning profile’, ‘lecture methods profile’, ‘average profile’, and ‘low teacher-centered and low learner-centered profile’. High learner-centered groups showed significantly higher levels of creative competencies than other profile groups. Additionally, profile membership was found to be closely related to students’ individual and school characteristics. This study provided suggestions for an improvement of current instructional practices in the classroom.
