The Influence of Critical Mass and Multicultural Stress on Decreasing of the Impact of Stereotype Threat on Marginalized Undergraduates

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The present study explores the potential impact critical mass has on students attending a minority serving institution. Can attending a minority serving institution by itself reduce the effect of stereotype threat and Multicultural Stress of students of color who attend these institutions? If so, then minority serving institutions may be creating a healthier overall environment for the success of students of color just by having a critical mass of students of color. This study demonstrates that stereotype threat maybe alleviated if a college/university commits to reaching critical mass. But, the effects of the two of the three types of racism institutional and personally mediated still exist and negatively impacts Asian, Black, and Latinx undergraduate students.
