The Role of Preservice Teachers' Knowledge and Motivation in a Video-Based Simulation on Assessment Skills

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Assessment skills are crucial for teachers to create effective learning environments that are adapted to students’ learning progress. However, these assessment skills are not systematically acquired at university. Research shows that relations to teachers’ prerequisites, like knowledge, motivation, interest, or self-regulation, are not sufficiently understood. Starting from a video-based simulation developed by the research team, the presented study systematically examined the relations between pre-service teachers’ (N = 51) assessment skills, their professional knowledge, and motivational-affective states and traits. Results show the importance of teachers’ knowledge for assessment skills and as a moderator for the influence of motivation on assessment skills. This highlights that teachers’ prerequisites should be addressed more systematically in the context of assessment skills in university.
