Reassessing of Asian American Students' Academic Outcomes in College: Mediating Effects of Students' College Experiences

Abstract

The research on Asian American students’ academic achievements in secondary education is well developed, but their college experiences and outcomes warrant further exploration. With a focus on Asian American students, I examine the relationship between students’ race and the college outcomes, as well as the extent to which students’ college experiences and perceptions mediate the relationship. I found that Asian American college students had a lower college GPA and lower scores in self-assessment of critical thinking and communication skills compared to their White peers. The sense of belonging and academic engagement accounted for the largest share of these relationships. These findings highlight an area of continued need and interest regarding Asian American students’ experiences and educational outcomes in higher education.
