The Alberta Teachers’ Association released their first resource aimed at LGBTQI teachers in early 2018, suggesting that LGBTQI teachers in Alberta are only now gaining visibility in their professional organization. Butler (2004, p. 141) argues that self-representation is core to humanization and those “who have no chance to represent themselves run a greater risk of being treated as less than human.” This project contributes to the field of anti-oppressive education to better understand the experiences of LGBTQI teachers navigating the complex dynamics of professionalism with the aim of improving working and learning environments for all LGBTQI-identified individuals in Canadian educational contexts.
