Utilizing a narrative inquiry approach this presentation examines the practices and approaches of school leaders as they enact culturally responsive and transformative leadership and navigate the path of critical and culturally responsive leadership. It is important for critical leaders to tease out their work so that others can learn from it. Findings reveal that culturally leadership approaches increase student engagement, community involvement and more culturally relevant teaching; however there are tensions that leaders face in their efforts that must be addressed and that others can learn from on their leadership journey. This research connects theory to practice and has significance for those involved in school leadership at all levels in both formal and informal roles.
