Interrupting Racist Nativism and Invisibility Through Performance: Latinx Youth Utilize Assembly as Activist Platform

Abstract

This paper examines how Latinx youth utilize a school assembly to convey their opposition to racist nativist and xenophobic political rhetoric. Combing a Latinx critial theory (LatCrit), racist nativism, and space and place frames—aid an analysis of how racial, economic and political forces shape schooling realities for Latinx youth. This frame also facilitates an exploration of how youth enact agency to interrupt oppressive realities. Data derived from participant observations, interviews, and documents. Data was analysed using four levels of inductive coding. Finding detail participants link the broader racist nativist political climate to a racialized school culture at Logro High, a prestigious urban school wherein Latinx youth mediate feelings of invisibility.
