The purpose of this constructivist descriptive case study will be to understand how college band members develop personal understandings of inclusion within a college marching band program with a stated commitment to inclusion. Data collected will include formal band documentation, observations of both full band and inclusion committee meetings, and interviews with band members and gatekeepers. Using Bronfenbrenner’s (2005) bioecological theory of human development as a theoretical framework through which to analyze both personal and environmental characteristics that influence student development, this study is expected to describe multiple levels of proximal processes within the marching band to help band directors and leadership educators better understand the multifaceted development opportunities present within a marching band.
