Student and Teacher Perceptions of Collaborative and Autonomous Learning in a Secondary Choral Ensemble: A Case Study

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this case study was to investigate teacher and student perceptions of a collaborative student-led learning experience in a secondary choral classroom.During this study, students in a high school choral ensemble independently selected, learned, and performed a piece of choral repertoire with as little input and assistance from the teacher as possible. Results suggest that autonomous and collaborative music learning projects may lead to increased student engagement and enjoyment of music classes, and may also stimulate increased intrinsic motivation and musical independence. Benefits, challenges, barriers, and affordances associated with independent learning experiences are discussed.
