Students in the U.S. and those in Confucian-based Asian cultures are often contrasted regarding their learning styles and supports needed to promote college success. This systematic literature review evaluated research from these two areas of the world about the effectiveness of supports for college students in increasing student GPA. We found that both groups improved college GPAs using motivational and individual learning strategies, but only American studies addressed contextual issues such as school and peer support, social engagement and student employment. Results of this literature review point out gaps in the literature on this important topic, and could help faculty and college staff better support American and Asian students in both areas of the world.
