Understanding the antecedents and consequences of teachers’ work motivation is an imperative. Based on the Self-Determination (SDT) framework, the effects of work pressures experienced by teachers and teachers’ perception of students’ motivation on teachers’ self-determination at the workplace, in turn affecting teachers’ job satisfaction and job stress were examined. 508 private education teachers from Singapore participated in this study. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was employed to analyse the data. Results specified that teachers’ self-determined motivation mediated the impact of teachers’ work pressure and teachers’ perception of students’ motivation on teachers’ job satisfaction and job stress. Whereas teachers were seen to be more self-determined in functioning in schools, students on the other hand, were perceived by teachers to be non self-determined.
