Gentrification has become a common slur levied at universities by the popular media, but few studies have measured this empirically. This study uses 2010 and 2015 ACS Economic Indicators and 2015 IPEDS Institutional data in California to measure whether neighborhoods with a university were more likely to gentrify. The question of gentrification is of vital importance given the public good mission of universities and this study provides practitioners and researchers with preliminary quantitative evidence of the role of universities in gentrification.
