Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Cycles of Campus Racism and Institutional Responses

Abstract

Student activism for racial justice on their college campuses is not new (Rhoads, 2016). Yet, when taking a closer examination of student demands, the all-too-similar concerns from decade to decade (Jaschik, 2015), suggest a more complicated relationship between students and their higher education institutions. This multi-institution case study uses document collection, interviews, and multidimensional scaling to better understand the dynamics between administrators, Students of Color, activism, and how racism on college campuses is addressed. Findings aim to provide language and tools for higher education institutions to have more productive, constructive conversations between administrators and students, and steps to take act to address the racism on campus.
