Indigenous Advocates in Schools: Investigating the Interventions

Abstract

While success in school continues to elude Indigenous students in Canada, a response to this issue has been the ongoing calls to integrate Indigenous cultural knowledge/perspectives into schools. While research has addressed some of what this might entail, absent so far, are studies that investigate what takes place inside these interventions in order to understand more fully (a) what happens at the "cultural interface" (the intersection of Euro-centric and
Indigenous domains of knowledge and pedagogy) (b) how schools engage, adapt, and negotiate these interventions as they interact with each other in their local school contexts in order to effect this change. This study looks specifically at the role of Indigenous Advocates in integrating Indigenous perspectives and supporting Indigenous students.
