Utilizing Cultural Networks and Effective Strategies for Academic Resilience Among Black Males in Higher Education

Abstract

This multi-case qualitative study focuses on the development of resiliency strategies, and the development of cultural networks, that support Black male students in postsecondary education. These practices are intended to help Black male students avoid or successfully face the numerous psychosocial, socioeconomic and academic challenges that often lead to high dropout rates, widening achievement gaps, and perpetual failure within Black communities. Interviews were conducted and Anti-Deficit Achievement Theory, (ADAF) was used as a theoretical framework. Findings indicated that resiliency and cultural networking were significant factors in achieving academic achievement and a sense of belonging for Black male students in postsecondary education.
