Abstract

Accepting educational responsibility is closely tied to data visualizations, commonly used to visually communicate ideas and information (McCandless, 2014; Sweeny, 2017). This session addresses ways arts educators use data visualizations to further educational responsibility goals at the classroom, professional, and policy levels. While we can recite facts and figures to policy makers, many find it more effective to use visuals. Through a series of papers on data visualizations including the recent history of data visualizations, ways art educators engage students in creating data visualizations, policy discrepancies made visible through data visualizations, and some technical and collaborative perspectives, this session showcases many options. This focuses on educational processes involved in creating data visualizations and how visualizations may further educational responsibility.
