Investigating Academic Mind-Sets in New Contexts and With Novel Conceptual Approaches

Mon, April 12, 4:30 to 6:00pm EDT (4:30 to 6:00pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 2a: Cognitive and Motivational Processes Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Numerous empirical studies have investigated beliefs about intelligence, also known as intelligence mindsets, with recent work suggesting that context is critical for fully understanding the importance of these beliefs on achievement motivation and success. In this session, we further this area of research and present several studies that test different types of academic mindsets in new contexts and with new scales. The studies we discuss investigate differences between competitive and school math mindsets, examine socializers’ mindsets as influences of student attitudes, and propose new scales to assess intelligence mindset in children, college students, and teachers. Overall, this symposium aims to contribute knowledge regarding how academic mindsets are measured and in which settings they play a role.
