Who Has a "Seat at the Table"? Equity in Decision Making About Computer Science Education

Mon, April 12, 4:30 to 6:00pm EDT (4:30 to 6:00pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 1e: Engineering and Computer Science Structured Poster Session

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

This session elevates a particular dimension of equity in computer science education (CSed) - the question of who makes decisions about what CS education should look like. While the CS for All movement has resulted in state and district commitment to ensuring all youth have an opportunity to learn CS, these commitments to access alone don’t fully constitute equitable CSed. This session aims to deepen conversations about equity and CSed by considering who has a ‘seat at the table.’ We highlight efforts engaging stakeholders from across the education landscape—parents, educators, administrators, students—exploring how decision-making is structured, how voices that are usually marginalized might be elevated, the tensions involved in these processes, and the relationships between participation and equity.
