Session Type: Symposium
Young bilingual children continue to face the challenge of an education system not being prepared to meet their needs. In this symposium presenters will use an interdisciplinary perspective to discuss the intersection among language, learning, and disability for young bilingual children from birth to age 8. The session will begin with a discussion of a sociocultural and integrative perspective on the development and education of young bilingual children with disabilities, followed by a discussion of the social organization of learning for bilingual children in inclusive classrooms, and of issues and implications of partnering with families. The session will end with a discussion of recommendations for future research to inform equitable policies and practices for young bilingual children with disabilities.
