Session Type: Symposium
This year’s AERA theme, ‘accepting educational responsibility,’ allows educators to reflect on their role in making the world a better place. Among the many social ills which afflict society, is the issue of equitable access to resources and opportunities for authentic and synergistic participation. This cross institutional conversation, comprising five studies focusing on the sociocultural nature of education, explores how teacher discourse creates learning opportunities in different educational settings (Rex, 2006). The five studies in this symposium contextualize and explore issues of language and discourse practices within specific teaching and learning spaces, to propose concrete ways to make education more equitable, reflexive, critical, and, ultimately, transformative. Overall, these studies illustrate useful approaches grounded in evidence-based interpretation of data.
