Session Summary

Bridging Research and Practice for Transformative Education Amid Pandemics: Dialoguing With School District Leaders

Fri, April 9, 12:20 to 1:20pm EDT (12:20 to 1:20pm EDT), Division G, Division G Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Echoing President Shaun Harper’s call, and resonating with Du Bois’ view of research, researchers must transcend the academic industry by finding ways for their research to become actionable, and serve the public good (Du Bois 1898/1978; Ladson-Billings, Tate & Banks, 2006). This VP session centers School District Leaders who have had to grapple with myriad changes affecting their most vulnerable student populations that emanated from the twin pandemics of racial inequality and COVID-19. In doing so, we feature a dialogue with these leaders about key ways they feel research and practice inform one another, with the idea that authentic dialogue and relationships across these two groups can lead to more transformative educational policies and practices.
