The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Dissolution of the University Campus: Investigating Students' Support Networks

Sat, April 10, 10:40am to 12:10pm EDT (10:40am to 12:10pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

This paper problematises students’ academic and wellbeing support during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. By drawing on a mixed methods research in six different UK universities (3 research intensive; 3 less-research intensive), we apply social network analysis to demonstrate how students from different socio-economic backgrounds have unequal access to such support during times of crisis. We use the project to uncover ways to mediate the effects of Covid-19 for current students and to prepare for any similar crises in the future. We conclude the paper by making policy and practice recommendations for universities and educators to consider when developing effective and inclusive student support practices.
