The repeal of the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA) provides a powerful opportunity for researchers, teacher preparation literacy instructors, and administrators from K-12 schools to have input and discuss what the coursework replacement of the RICA should include. Recent literacy research, instead of RICA’s outdated framework, can be implemented to encourage literacy success for more diverse students and teachers. This study uses a large-scale survey and focus groups for practitioner-research to investigate these issues together and make meaning, with input from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, California Writing Project, and Center for the Advancement of Reading. Descriptive statistics and theme analysis will be shared with participants to grow understanding together.
