This paper analyses the wages of immigrants in comparison to native born citizens. In theory wages are strongly related to educational attainment and experience. Furthermore skills are regarded as an important determining aspect. The analyses show the different effects of these factors on wages by using the US and the Canadian PIAAC data 2012 considering individuals’ migration status. The results confirm the positive effects of educational attainment, work experience and skills, but also give insights that negative effects occur from the fact of being an immigrant. In regard of public education this leads to the question if access to public education solves the sustaining problem of pay inequity and discrimination of immigrants when they enter the labor market.
