Secondary School Science Student Attitudes and Grade Point Average: A Perception Paradox

Sat, April 10, 9:30 to 10:30am EDT (9:30 to 10:30am EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Science Teaching and Learning Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between high school students’ grade point average and their attitudes towards science. Modern science pedagogy emphasizes the importance of connecting the science curriculum to students’ culture and life experiences. Results revealed statistically significant relationships between how useful students viewed science to be in their everyday lives, in college, and in their future careers. Results also revealed that the more students believed science to be useful, the higher their grade point average. Results further revealed that a significant number of students do not find science to be useful in their daily lives.
