Instructional Design Features of Self-Paced MOOCs

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Online Teaching and Learning Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

Although many higher education institutions offer self-paced massive open online courses (MOOCs) on platforms like edX, little systematic effort has been made to examine the instructional design of MOOCs. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to review self-paced MOOCs on edX and summarize their instructional design features for those interested in designing and opening a self-paced MOOC on a platform. A total of 40 MOOCs representing engineering, computer sciences, communications, and business and management were randomly chosen for analysis. The instructional design features of the MOOCs were organized in terms of structure, course information, and surveys as well as types of video, assignments, and online discussion. Issues regarding current instructional design were discussed.
