Educators often want to use collaborative project-based learning in their classes, but lack of guidance on structuring such projects inhibits their efforts or leads to less-than-optimal results. The Design Thinking for Engaged Learning is a structuring device through which educators can scaffold collaborative project-based learning. However, the design thinking process has been difficult to do in online learning environments. In this design-based research study we investigated multiple iterations of a purely online design thinking workshop for university faculty. Our findings suggest that the design thinking process can be facilitated effectively in online contexts, but there remain a number of issues that future research should address.
