Teachers Seek Support for Antiracism Conversations in Their Classrooms: Insights From Educator Peer Exchanges

Fri, April 9, 12:20 to 1:20pm EDT (12:20 to 1:20pm EDT), Division K, Division K - Section 10 Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

In an attempt to accept greater responsibility for the inadequate preparation of educators for work in racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse P–12 schools and postsecondary institutions, hosted three Educator Peer Exchange online forums to provide a platform for teachers to share how they navigated conversations about race, implicit bias, and social justice with their students following widespread protests against racial inequality. Through observations of the Peer Exchanges and optional follow-up surveys, we have identified areas in which teachers require support in the form of professional development/training and resources. Participating teachers are committed to building antiracist classrooms but lack the tools to do so and seek more actionable guidance to broach the topic with students.
