Teacher educators have a limited amount of time to prepare candidates for becoming political change agents. We have to understand the efficacy of those preparation efforts. As a result, we developed the Equity Scenario Response Survey (ESRS) to understand our candidates’ preparation of their sociopolitical identity, defined by equity knowledge and skills. The ESRS is comprised of a psychometric scale and open-ended questions. Using data from three pre/post cohorts, (N=365), we examined the scale’s psychometric properties and developed a qualitative codebook derived from open-ended responses. Our findings from quantitative analyses revealed a reliable and valid scale for measuring candidates’ knowledge and skills. Qualitative analyses provided rich, nuanced information about candidates’ understanding and application of their skills.
