This paper proposal focuses on a “Grow Your Own” (GYO) teacher education program for Latinx students called Realizing Inspiring and Successful Educators (RISE). The RISE program is a collaboration between our teacher education program in the southern United States and a neighboring school district that began in 2017. Based on qualitative data collected through interviews with and written reflections from program participants, we analyze the ways in which border crossing has shaped the perspectives and ambitions of our students regarding education and teaching. With theoretical foundations in LatCrit, Critical Race, and post-colonial theories, this project utilizes social justice education as a lens for considering how these students contribute to our education system through their work in U.S. schools.
