This paper examines affordances and constraints of online language teacher education (OLTE) in second language (L2) teacher development through a systemic review of publications on OLTE between the years 2000 and 2020 in related professional fields that include TESOL, applied linguistics, and L2 teacher education. From an ecological perspective, we discuss e-affordances of OLTE and challenges to the quality of OLTE. This discussion will highlight critical issues and possibilities that L2 teacher educators currently face in promoting collaborative, reflective, and experiential learning as well as a future research agenda for research on discursive practices of OLTE.
