This presentation explores cultural identities of an ethnic minority group through a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). Conducting a three-year-long CBPAR study with an urban community school’s students, teachers, and administrators, the author reveals the dynamic changes of recent Asian-American immigrants’ issues and their cultural identity conflicts in multicultural settings. This study emphasizes the intersections of Asian-American cultural identity inquiry, critical multiculturalism, racial identity theory, and narrative inquiry.
Audiences will gain understandings of: 1. How Asian immigrants and Asian-Americans in a community view their cultural identities. 2. How a CBPAR study facilitates minorities to voice their identities in multicultural settings. 3. What the meaningful implications of this study are for other minority groups, schools, community organizations, and education research.
