Taking Collective Action and Responsibility to Address Inequity: The Case of Partnerships for Community Schools

Mon, April 12, 2:50 to 4:20pm EDT (2:50 to 4:20pm EDT), Division A, Division A - Section 4 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Community schools are a place-based strategy, wherein schools partner with community agencies and local government to provide an integrated focus on academics, holistic supports, and youth and community development and engagement. At their foundation, these institutions are rooted in communities, but they also require that leaders engage in the thoughtful coordination of resources across institutions to provide students with consistent access to integrated supports. This session elevates how leaders maintain partnerships that can support community schools in developing their models in technically sound and community-engaged ways. The six featured papers examine how collaborations are fostered at the school, district, community, and county levels and raise questions about the challenges that can emerge when top-down support intersects with community-driven strategies.
