Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
Many researchers have called for more research centered on motivation in students from historically marginalized populations. In this symposium, we build on Patall et al.’s (2019) AERA symposium on motivation in diverse students, Wigfield and Koenka’s (2020) special issue of Contemporary Educational Psychology on motivation theory, which included theorists’ perspectives on motivation in diverse students, and Koenka and Wigfield’s (2020) APA symposium that included the theories in the special issue, critical race theory, and Jamaal Matthews’ discussion. The panel will extend the discussion of motivation in ethnically and racially diverse students by discussing next steps in motivation theory and research. The format will be fully discussion-based, with the panelists interacting with each other and the audience.
