The AERA 2021 Conference theme, “Accepting Responsibility,” emphasizes the
importance of educational scholars extending their roles beyond that of producers of knowledge
to apply knowledge and research toward equity and social justice. One way that researchers can
influence educational policy for social justice is to organize and advocate through scholar
collectives. Scholar collectives may publish research briefs, write op-eds, and circulate petitions
to promote policies for educational equity. They can also be a source of support for scholars who
feel marginalized in the academy and more traditional organizations.
