Principals can play an important role in the experiences of novice teachers and have the potential to shape the academic experiences and life outcomes of students and promote equity, justice, and inclusion through their involvement with FYTs. In this study, we examine principals’ interactions with first-year teachers (FYTs) from the perspective of 61 FYTs from across the U.S. We identify roles principals assume in their interactions with FYTs, ways these roles influence FYTs and their instructional practices, and ways these roles are used to promote justice and equity.
