This study explores the experimentation of five prospective teachers (PTs) who worked on the dual goal of differentiation and challenging work during their field placement in the context of a video-club setting. We trace the changes in their practice and the challenges they faced for this goal along three emerging categories. In this proposal, we focus on one category—designing and using enablers and extenders—to argue that despite the complexity of the field-placement context and PTs’ inexperience, their experimentation with enablers and extenders as a way to engage all their students in mathematically challenging work was substantial. Despite ongoing challenges, the study points towards the potential of similar programs in pursuing ambitious goals for students through PTs’ education.
