Computer Simulation as a Methodological Tool in Curriculum Design

Abstract

Teacher-preparation program (TPP) faculty regularly review and revise individual courses. Continuous improvement, however, is more difficult to apply at the program level where modifications require coordination and can have unforeseen effects. We describe methods to support program-level continuous improvement using simulation tools. Computer-based curriculum modeling (CCM) relies on well-established modeling theory and tools to create a virtual curriculum that can simulate student learning across individual courses and the curriculum as a whole. We describe results from simulations with two versions of a curriculum, noting how these simulations contributed to a curriculum redesign effort. We conclude with commentary on generalizing these methods, noting both theoretical and practical benefits of CCM for curriculum theory and practice.
