Drawing on an ethnographic study of an early childhood center in U.S. Midwestern city, I explore the role of the early childhood leader in home-school relationships. Utilizing critical and humanizing approaches to family engagement, I look at the element of mutual trust (Gallo, 2017) between Lisa, the center director, and Queen, a former student who now has younger siblings at the center. I analyze the theme of trust through Lisa’s telling of an incident where she broke Queen’s trust, her subsequent reflection, and the work she did to repair trust in their relationship.
