Teacher education was once an independent system in China until the late 20th century. Since then, other types of institutions were allowed and encouraged to play a role in teacher training. A growing number of new teachers have recently graduated from top-tier research universities, particularly in metropolitans. The question arose whether normal universities have advantages in teacher training? Making use of the high school entrance exam and college entrance exam mock test scores, we empirically examine the value-added difference on students of teachers from different types of universities in senior high school in Haidian, Beijing. Our analysis uncovers a consistent higher value-added of normal universities in Math, but students taught by teachers from other types of universities perform better in chemistry.
