Feeling Invested in the Freedom School Model: Engagement and Curricular Voice from a Parent's Perspective

Sat, April 10, 2:30 to 3:30pm EDT (2:30 to 3:30pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 1b: Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine Arts Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

This paper examines one Freedom Schools site based in an urban community in central Texas. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to discuss how parents’ and guardians’ perspectives can inform how curriculum and pedagogical purposes are more fully centered on families and their communities. The current heightened state of race relations (e.g., the Black Lives Matter movement after the police killing of George Floyd) have spotlighted issues of race and equity that play out in schools. This is especially relevant in areas of curricula and school partnerships with families that are not actually centered around the families they serve nor the communities in which they are situated.
